SLEEP

My grandma (Mimi) passed away on September 26th.  On the 25th the family stood around praying and laughing and loving.  As I left that night, I had a song inside that I needed to write.  I wrote it over the weekend and we played it at her funeral last Tuesday.  It was the hardest song I've ever recorded.  I'd get a line in and would break down in tears.  But I finally got through it - though you can still hear my voice is on the verge throughout.

SLEEP
© 2013 Ross Christopher

her light glows a little dimmer
as her eyes look back with care
as loved ones near
with tears

CHORUS
she has to sleep now
she's done so much
she's filled the world now
she's loved so much

i whisper love into her ears
and try to hide my cries
this is the last time
its time

CHORUS

too soon you came
and took her away
but she needs her sleep
cause she's loved so much

ATLAS: Light (recording strings for Sleeping at Last)

Over the past month I've had the amazing opportunity of recording strings for 2 brand new Sleeping at Last tunes!  Ryan is quite possibly the most humble and genuine artist I've ever worked with.  I got to know Ryan this past fall on tour with him and Jars of Clay.  It was a blast and I consider it an honor to call him a friend!

Here's the 2 songs I recorded strings on.  They are part of his newest EP, ATLAS: LIGHT.

If you haven't purchased the EP, do so HERE!

p.s. it's also doesn't hurt when said album becomes an iTunes featured album (along w/ the likes of The Civil Wars)...

Quiet Spaces

Last night, I got home from rehearsal with a melody and some lyrics in my head.  I immediately wrote down the words and headed down to the studio to capture the music.   A couple hours later, I think I'm on to a pretty promising piece.  Here's the lyrics - enjoy!

Quiet Spaces
(c)2012 Ross Christopher

There's a sound for the quiet spaces
A sound for the broken places
A sound that is stillness
It shakes the ground

There it is
Way off in the distance
It's growing stronger
The beat's getting faster

There's a sound for the quiet spaces
A sound for the broken places
A sound that is stillness
It shakes the ground

 There it is
It's unexpected
It's reconnected
Like lines between the words

There's a sound for the quiet spaces
A sound for the broken places
A sound that is stillness
It shakes the ground

Ross

Looper {composing a score from native sounds}

Here at the blog, I frequently showcase tidbits of creative brilliance that I discover while scouring the interwebs.  Here's a video that shows the making of the soundtrack for an upcoming (and amazing looking film - LOOPER), which uses native sounds (clicks, scratches, thuds, thumps, and other mundane sounds) to create the movie's soundtrack.  Son Lux, which I've done a little vocal work with, provided some added brilliance, so please check this out and thank me later!

WHY: music, recording, & touring?

Have you ever wondered why someone decides to pick up a guitar (violin, piano, etc.) and hit the road for a week, month, or year? Have you ever stopped to ask why artists spend hours upon hours in make-shift recording studios? Have you ever asked a musician what it is about their music that gives them life?

To be honest, having been a professional musician for over 13 years now, these questions rarely come about - usually only in interviews with radio, magazine, bloggers, or my closest friends and family.

Dan Haseltine (lead singer of Jars of Clay) wrote this recently:

I don’t know if you have ever thought about it, the reasons an artist might decide to go out on the road and perform concerts night after night. It might seem like a simple matter of economics. After all, at a point in history where people are not buying music in any shape that would allow artists to make the labor of creating music, a sole vocation, it is obvious that concerts would factor in.

The economics do matter. People can support an artist by purchasing a concert ticket and maybe a t-shirt at a show. This helps put confidence into the minds of the promoters that have to wonder if the gamble they make on the artist is a good one or not. If fans don’t show up for concerts, artist, will take their nomadic circuses elsewhere, since promoters don’t usually gamble on the same act more than once.

There is the record cycle. This is the space usually 3 months before a record releases, and six months to a year after the record is released. Artists tour and perform a specific group of songs in order to promote the recordings, and bolster sales and awareness of the band. This also helps solidify a brand with images and a performance aesthetic that helps define who the artist is and wants to be.

Some artists tour because they are in demand. The tour is more of a response to a cultural awareness, or exposure that placed them in the public conscience for a given moment., in other words, striking while the iron is hot. Others tour in order to build the necessary army of fans who support and push the artist into the public conscience.

Some artists tour with a transactional mindset. They are there to capitalize on their success, ride the wave and suck as much life out of their fifteen seconds of fame. The artist operates similarly to a professional athlete who knows they only have a few solid years of wear and tear on their bodies, so they push for the greatest amounts of money and build their sponsorship and endorsement portfolios as quickly as possible.

So why do I do music, recording, and touring?

Simply put, it's who I am. It's as natural an activity as going to the grocery store, going to work, eating food, and breathing. When I go a month or so without performing, I get the itch. The act of performance, isn't really an act at all; it's the natural outpouring of who God made me to be. So I pack up the suburban with my instruments and merchandise and hit the road for a few days, sometimes playing to hundreds of energetic fans and friends, and sometimes to the sound-guy and bar staff. But whoever is in attendance, the act of performing does something to (and for) me.

I write songs because I hear songs in my head that need to be written. I don't write them with a specific audience in mind, a demographic, a sales pitch; but because the words are something that I feel needs said. I'm able to wrestle with life, faith, politics, and relationships when I write. I'm able to speak in a voice I could not otherwise. The words say things. The instruments say things. And trust me, there's plenty to say!

So thank you for listening, buying my records, bringing your friends out to my shows. You help me breathe!

Peace,
Ross

Mastering the Album

I'm headed to Memphis, TN later today to wrap my album. Tomorrow morning I will be at Ardent Records as they will be mastering the entire album.

Mastering is the delicate science of making a perfect EQ, compression, panning, maximization (where needed), and is the overall final-step in wrapping a recording.

I've worked with the guys at Ardent on 4 different projects for mastering (they are sonic gurus) and I have a blast every time. There's always interesting (industry) folk in the studios recording and mixing. In the past I've run into guys from The Smashing Pumpkins, Huey Lewis & the News, North Mississippi Allstars, and more. Hopefully this trip will be no different.

Also, Memphis has some rockin' BBQ!

More pics and videos tomorrow from the studio...

Peace,
Ross

It is Finished...

Today I wrapped my album, BOXES & HUMAN FOG!

The recording...done.
The mixing...done.
The exhaustive listening and tweaking...done.

I could (potentially) do these 3 steps over and over and over again...always hearing something to fix, thinking of new parts to add, etc. But today I felt a final sense of completeness and am ready to step away from this album.

Now its off to Memphis, TN to get the album mastered at Ardent Records. Once they do the final mastering/magical touches to eq's, levels, panning, etc, it goes off to duplication!

In the mean time, you can PRE-ORDER it HERE for only $5.

Peace & thanks for all of the support!

2010 Projects & French Toast

This past year has been studio project after studio project. I have absolutely LOVED each and every one; working with artists to create fresh music that is pushing each of their limits respectively, and making really beautiful and thoughtful art.

I have learned a TON about the recording process and how to create and manipulate the sounds I hear in my head (i'm not totally nuts). Each record has increased in artistry and I can honestly say that each one I have wrapped, I have been able to say it was the best studio work i've done to date.

It's honed my playing skills (i did most of the instrumental and programming work), engineering and mixing abilities, but most of all my listening. 'Twas a fun fun year and I'm humbled to have been able to work with everyone!

Here they are in order...

ALSO...Cora asked me last night for french toast. Here's what was waiting for her this morning when she woke up.

She was a bit overwhelmed.

Ross

Recording Vocals

Welp, yesterday I recorded 4 tracks of vocals - ALL the vocals on those 4 tracks (lead vox, double vox, harmonies, oooh's and aaahhh's, and a couple yeah's). It went great and the sounds are better than expected. A few weeks back I bought one of these sweet numbers (the Primacoustic VoxGuard) to help with acoustic treatment. Its a sweet $100 fix to a make-shift home studio. Well worth the dollars in my opinion. Now begins the grueling process of listening to the vocals line-by-line and phrase-by-phrase. I like to record everything 3-4 times to give me plenty of options on phrasing, diction, pronunciation, etc. Then I begin comping everything, figuring out proper eq's, and any effects that help the song excel.

You can click the link below and hear some vocal-less tracks and PRE-ORDER the record, BOXES & HUMAN FOG.

That's all i've got for now. Thanks for reading & PEACE!

Wrapping Dear Genre's Album & BBQ

I just got back from Ardent Records (Memphis, TN) where I was mastering Dear Genre's upcoming album. I've been producing and engineering Dear Genre's new album for about the past 7-8 months and I really think we've created something special! Here's a quick video clip from the mastering suite:

Look for the album later this Fall - it will be sure to please!

Before I sign out, I must mention the BBQ...how can I not? It would be a grave and semi-mortal sin! Thursday night we hit this great place on Beal, and enjoyed some BBQ and blues. Friday afternoon we went to the BBQ Shop on Madison, where I was blown away with the eats....oh so good!

Have a wonderful weekend.

Peace,
Ross

Recording The Lost Narrative

This past weekend, Lacy and I wrote and recorded some tunes for the upcoming, The Lost Narrative album. We wrote 2 tunes from scratch: Escape & The Goodness In Your Heart. It looks like the album will be a 6-track EP, and I promise some awesome harmony-laden, folk-indie-electronicness. I'll throw another quick-mix on the blog tomorrow (so be sure to check back).

In the meantime, here are some pics from inside the studio:

I'm pumped for the album and I hope you are too!

Ross

Tracking

Kate and the girls are out of town, so last night I got a great deal of studio-work done on a song/riff/idea I've been toying with for almost a year now. I was able to lay down all of the drum tracks, bass, acoustic guitars, and 3 electric guitar tracks. The sounds are SO organic and raw - I'm lovin' it! I also laid down a couple string ideas on the synth, which I'll later replace with a symphony of beauty...that's what I do :-)

The plan (for now) is to play this beast over and over until I'm able to find just the right lyrics for it. I work that way.

Instrumentals and structure first.
Lyrics second. (most of the time anyway)

So now comes the process of reviewing and looking back at years of lyrics. I try and write about 5 songs/poems each week, so I have a dense catalog when it comes time to plug in the text. I already have a couple melodies in mind, so that should help narrow the search.

That's plenty for now, but I'll be showcasing a lot of the studio "happenings" in the weeks and months to come.
Peace!
