SiloTREE Studio {REDUX}

Many of you know that on top of songwriting and touring, I also manage, produce records, and write/record string arrangements from my studio (SiloTREE Studio) in St. Louis.  Last week I added a new studio page to my website highlighting some recent arrangements, as well as studio information.

The internet has certainly made the world flat...I have been blessed to work with a number of artists (some of which I've never met in person), and I believe that the world is becoming more creative and beautiful from these types of partnerships, collaborations, and works.

Bottom line, if you're in need of a professional, comfortable, and creative studio to record your next album or EP at, contact me.  If you're interested in adding strings to one of your songs or albums, I do that too!

Simply send me a WAV file of your tune, I'll record an arrangement, and we bounce files back and forth until you've got a beautiful piece of art.  It really is that simple!

Scorpion Girl w/ Dear Genre

Hey folks,

I spent yesterday in the studio with Dear Genre recording tracks for his new song, Scorpion Girl.  Its a cool summer tune that's gonna get some major traction!  We spent the bulk of the day on drums, telecaster, and bass.  I've got a day recording synth and mix-downs ahead of me, and then we'll have ourselves a song!

SiloTREE Studio

Last week I re-designed my studio (SiloTREE Studio). Its been, and probably always will be, a work in progress. But over the past few years I've been fortunate to record and produce lots of amazing artists. Here's a quick clip I shot today as we did some acoustic tracking with the band, Harmony Grove.

St Louis Beacon Nod...

2010 Projects & French Toast

This past year has been studio project after studio project. I have absolutely LOVED each and every one; working with artists to create fresh music that is pushing each of their limits respectively, and making really beautiful and thoughtful art.

I have learned a TON about the recording process and how to create and manipulate the sounds I hear in my head (i'm not totally nuts). Each record has increased in artistry and I can honestly say that each one I have wrapped, I have been able to say it was the best studio work i've done to date.

It's honed my playing skills (i did most of the instrumental and programming work), engineering and mixing abilities, but most of all my listening. 'Twas a fun fun year and I'm humbled to have been able to work with everyone!

Recording Vocals

Welp, yesterday I recorded 4 tracks of vocals - ALL the vocals on those 4 tracks (lead vox, double vox, harmonies, oooh's and aaahhh's, and a couple yeah's). It went great and the sounds are better than expected. A few weeks back I bought one of these sweet numbers (the Primacoustic VoxGuard) to help with acoustic treatment. Its a sweet $100 fix to a make-shift home studio. Well worth the dollars in my opinion.Now begins the grueling process of listening to the vocals line-by-line and phrase-by-phrase. I like to record everything 3-4 times to give me plenty of options on phrasing, diction, pronunciation, etc. Then I begin comping everything, figuring out proper eq's, and any effects that help the song excel.

Recording The Lost Narrative

This past weekend, Lacy and I wrote and recorded some tunes for the upcoming, The Lost Narrative album. We wrote 2 tunes from scratch: Escape & The Goodness In Your Heart. It looks like the album will be a 6-track EP, and I promise some awesome harmony-laden, folk-indie-electronicness. I'll throw another quick-mix on the blog tomorrow (so be sure to check back).

Here's some new lyrics to a song Lacy and I will be recording tonight for the upcoming The Lost Narrative album. Its a theme I think plagues culture - this notion that we remain in the comfortable and never really pursue our wildest dreams.

My Time at Ardent - Day 02

Day 2 was all about the studio. After our morning round of coffee, we headed over to Ardent Records to master the record. Kevin & Larry Nix run the mastering suite and do an amazing job - kudos!

About 1/2 way through, we gave our ears a break, took a full studio tour and heard a little more of the Ardent history...very rich!

The place is adorned with platinum and gold records, Grammy's, and some amazing vintage equipment. We even ran into Luther Dickinson (singer/guitarist for The Black Crowes & The North Mississippi All-stars).

We wrapped up the project in the afternoon and it sounds absolutely O-mazing!

Tracking

Kate and the girls are out of town, so last night I got a great deal of studio-work done on a song/riff/idea I've been toying with for almost a year now. I was able to lay down all of the drum tracks, bass, acoustic guitars, and 3 electric guitar tracks. The sounds are SO organic and raw - I'm lovin' it! I also laid down a couple string ideas on the synth, which I'll later replace with a symphony of beauty...that's what I do :-)

The plan (for now) is to play this beast over and over until I'm able to find just the right lyrics for it. I work that way.

Lyrics second. (most of the time anyway)

So now comes the process of reviewing and looking back at years of lyrics. I try and write about 5 songs/poems each week, so I have a dense catalog when it comes time to plug in the text. I already have a couple melodies in mind, so that should help narrow the search.

That's plenty for now, but I'll be showcasing a lot of the studio "happenings" in the weeks and months to come.

July Vlog-o-Tron

These past few months I've been in the studio producing a couple great artists. One project is 99% complete, and with a trip to Ardent Records in Memphis later this month to master the record, I'll wrap that project up. The other is about 70% complete. And now I'm itching to record my own stuff that's been brewing up since I released The River Child, back in 2008.

The plan (as of today) is to release a Ross Christopher E.P. sometime before Christmas, and to release an album with my sister (Lacy Adair - her album is incredible - CHECK IT OUT!) sometime late Fall. Both projects will be totally unique in their own right(s).

I'm mostly pumped because both are in the pre-production stages, and they span totally different genres - progressive/indie/rock to electronic/folk...yeah buddy, we went there.

I'll keep everyone posted as things progress. In the meantime, you can download The River Child HERE!
